As we move into spring it is time to reawaken. In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox occurs when the Sun crosses the equator moving south to north. Equinox is from aequus, the Latin word for “equal” and nox, the Latin word for “night”—when the daytime and nighttime are equal in length. It is the return of the light, when the sun warms the earth and the plants and animals grow and reproduce.
The tale is that Ostara, the ancient Germanic goddess of the spring, transformed a bird into a hare, and the hare responded by laying colored eggs for her festival. The Anglo-Saxon’s called her Eostre. and she is known for giving her name to the Christian Easter. Eostre and her spirit animal- the rabbit, represented spring and new beginnings.
Honor this time by cleansing, healing, and regenerating your Spirit. Cultivate light, hope, fertility, growth, and new beginnings with the return of the Sun. You can celebrate by opening all the windows and doors to let in the light. Bring nature indoors with fresh flowers. Clear away clutter to make way for new opportunities. Spend time in nature by having a picnic, riding a bike, or starting a garden. It is time to take action and the season of rest is over. But first, take a moment to pause during the brief balance between light and dark – day and night – and find your equilibrium. Now let’s go!
